Holiday Hopes

                                                                                              -M. O'Connor Dec. 19th  2022

I will tell you about what keeps people from giving up. Kids should never give up. If you fail the first time you can always try the second time.

Here are some things that can keep people from giving up, staying positive, setting goals, and pushing yourself through hard times.

First, staying positive can help with living longer. Also, positivity can help with lowering depression, lowering stress, and pain. Another reason people shouldn't give up is because it helps to keep them healthy. Staying positive can also help with reducing the risk of death and cancer. In the novel, "Out of My Mind," kids make fun of Melody's cerebral palsy but she doesn't let it bother her and stays positive.

Next, you must remember your own limits. You must remember you are doing this for a good reason. Asking for help doesn’t make you a failure. You can push yourself to do hard things. Some things are difficult but you can achieve them. In the novel, “Out of My Mind," Melody's father talks to her like she is a grown up, not a child and this really pushes her.

Third, when you set goals make sure they are specific and realistic. It takes time for change and for it to become a habit. Repeating a goal makes it stick. Roadblocks don’t mean you're a failure. Whatever you do in life, try your best and don't give up. Melody's goal was to go into a general education class and that's what she did, that was her goal and she achieved it.

Lastly, my essay talks about what keeps people from giving up. Stop caring about what others think, remember most fail because of lack of planning.True success is all about working towards meaningful goals and dreams. It does not matter how slowly

you go as long as you do not stop.

The History of Valentines Day

-By: L. Rosborg Feb. 22nd 2023

When most people think of Valentine’s Day, they think of letters, hearts, chocolates, and roses. But in the 5th century, it was a different story. Valentine’s Day(or Lupercalia) was a feast celebrated from February thirteenth through fifteenth in which the Romans would sacrifice a goat and a dog. People didn’t associate Valentine’s Day with love until the fifteenth and fourteenth centuries. It was associated with love because of the lovebirds of spring. On Valentine’s Day, people exchanged poems and letters with loved ones. Valentine’s Day is related to the Industrial Revolution because, in the early twentieth century, there was an increase in manufacturing, so people made Valentine’s Day products. It wasn’t till 1861 that Richard Cadbury came up with the choice of giving candy on Valentine’s Day. He packaged chocolate in heart-shaped boxes decorated with rosebuds and cupids. Although the past has already happened, it is primary to learn the history of Holidays such as Valentine’s Day.

The History of Halloween

Halloween was first invented about 2,000 years ago, it was invented in Europe. Halloween was first started by Celtic people in Europe celebrating the end of the harvest and the start of a new year in a festival called Samhain. Samhain is a place located in Ireland. Halloween was first known as the evening before All Saints Day, then All Hallows Eve, and later, Halloween. 2,000 years ago in Samhain, they celebrated Halloween by celebrating the dead with a festival on October 31st and usually features a bonfire and communication with the dead. On Halloween now we celebrate by trick or treating in costumes.

these days, we dress up in scary or non-scary costumes, go trick or treating, or just eat candy. The U.S. started trick or treating because they thought people that dressed up in costumes impersonated people from the dead, so the U.S. thought the dead should receive offerings on their behalf.

Shiloh has a Rocking New Attraction!

 Shiloh's Rocking New Attraction:

Two significant additions to Shiloh — the Freedom Rock honoring those who serve in the military and a tribute to local heritage recognizing the contributions of German farmers — are now on display at a new village park under development. The stunning mural — the first Freedom Rock in the state — was unveiled recently during a dedication ceremony as was St. Clair County Historical Society’s interpretive sign spotlighting what is referred to as the “Latin farmers.” “It was a fabulous turnout. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback,” Shiloh Mayor Robert Weilmuenster said. “We’ve seen a lot of cars there. We still have work to do (on the park).”

Village officials, mayors from Belleville, Lebanon and Waterloo, guests, and residents at the new space at the intersection of South Main Street and Shiloh Station Road. “The village hopes that the Freedom Rock stands for generations in honor of all those who served and sacrificed to keep our great nation free,” Village Clerk Brenda Kern said.

Artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen created the unique mural on a 10-ton rock. It is his newest addition to the 50-state Freedom Rock Tour. He began doing artwork to honor veterans 23 years ago — in his home state of Iowa — and now has 99 on view there. He has begun traveling to other states — next up is Ohio and Oklahoma. Four are already in Missouri. “The purpose is to thank veterans and show appreciation for their sacrifices and service — one rock at a time,” Sorensen said. While in Shiloh for about 10 days prior to Thanksgiving, Sorensen painted the rock in a heated tent. “The mayor and council members and volunteers were welcoming and helpful throughout, and even had a nice dinner with some Iowans who’ve relocated and started a successful business in the Shiloh area,” he said.

Come by and check out the New Shiloh Freedom  Rock!
